Emma was raised alone by her father in a small cabin along a rocky section of the Sword Coast. He worked as a fisherman, or so she claims, though even as a young girl she deduced the truth. Silver brooches and salt pork are rarely found beneath the waves. Her father worked as a smuggler and part-time pirate, working along with a loose-knit group of bandits further down the coast. Her father would observe ships in passing and, using a small fishing dory and signal lamps, aid in their capture. In return he received a portion of the booty.
A few weeks before her ninth birthday, her cabin was attacked in the night and she was separated from her father, hauled off to live with the nearby nuns. When telling the story she'll often imply that it was brigands, but in truth the local constabulary finally tracked down the bandit gang.
